Embraer Selects Mahindra as Partner for IAF Transport Plane Tender

Embraer, a Brazilian aerospace firm, has announced a partnership with the Mahindra Group to participate in the Indian Air Force's (IAF) Multi-Role Transport Aircraft (MTA) programme, as per an ANI report.  

The collaboration aims to offer the KC-390 Millennium jet to replace the IAF's ageing transport fleet, competing against Tata-Lockheed Martin's C-130J. 

Embraer's Strategy for the IAF Programme 

Embraer and Mahindra Group's collaboration focuses on the MTA programme, which involves acquiring 60 aircraft, with an option for an additional 50%.  

The KC-390 is being proposed as a replacement for the AN-32, aiming to standardise the IAF's medium transport fleet. The KC-390, a twin-engine platform, is already in service with countries like Brazil and Portugal. 

Advantages of the KC-390 Over Competitors 

Embraer Defence & Security President, Bosco Da Costa Junior, highlights the KC-390's advantages over the American C-130J.  

The KC-390 claims to carry more and operate faster and higher, with high availability and mission accomplishment rates. Global fleet data indicates that the KC-390 achieves 93% availability and 99% mission accomplishment. 

Adani Group's Role in Embraer's Commercial Ventures 

Beyond military transport, Embraer is collaborating with the Adani Group for civilian aircraft ventures to meet rising demand for connectivity and regional flights.  

Despite receiving a Request for Proposal, Adani will not partake in the military project, underlining distinct partnership roles.

Supply Chain and Maintenance Operations in India 

With a global order book of approximately 70 KC-390 aircraft, including 10 new orders from the UAE and 2 from Colombia, Embraer seeks to utilise India as a hub.  

The plan is to expand Embraer's supply chain and maintenance repair operations (MRO) from India to support worldwide requirements.
