Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) has taken a significant step towards strengthening India’s shipbuilding industry by signing a long-term Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (HD KSOE). The MoU was exchanged during the event “Samudra se Samriddhi – Transforming India’s Maritime Sector”, inaugurated by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi on September 20, 2025, in Bhavnagar, Gujarat.

Union Minister of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways Shri Sarbananda Sonowal, Minister of State Shri Shantanu Thakur, senior executives from Hyundai, and CSL CMD Shri Madhu S. Nair were present at the occasion.

Building Large Vessels in India

The collaboration will leverage CSL’s infrastructure and HD KSOE’s global expertise to construct large vessels such as Suezmax tankers, container ships, and Capesize bulk carriers at CSL’s new 310-meter dry dock, inaugurated in January 2024. The facility can accommodate the construction of up to six vessels annually.

A Block Fabrication Facility (BFF) is also planned in Kochi, spanning 80 acres with an investment of about ₹3,700 crore and an annual capacity of 1,20,000 MT. This project is expected to generate nearly 2,000 direct jobs and substantially more indirect employment across supply chains, MSMEs, and ancillary industries.

Focus on Innovation and Growth

The partnership will enable joint execution of projects during the transition phase, while exploring new opportunities in greenfield shipyards, sustainable shipbuilding, and skill development. It aligns closely with national initiatives like Maritime India Vision (MIV) 2030 and Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision (MAKV) 2047, reinforcing India’s aspiration to emerge as a global shipbuilding hub.

Greenfield Shipyard in Tamil Nadu

In addition, CSL signed a second MoU with Guidance Tamil Nadu, the state’s investment promotion agency, to explore a greenfield shipyard project worth ₹15,000 crore. This state-of-the-art facility, developed with a Korean partner, is expected to create nearly 10,000 jobs in its first phase and may include a modern ship repair complex.

Cochin Shipyard Share Price Performance

On September 24, 2025, Cochin Shipyard share price (NSE: COCHINSHIP) opened at ₹1,895.00 and closed at ₹1,898.00, up by 0.67%. The stock price touched its day’s high at ₹1,910.00.
