Tamil Nadu is gearing up to become a leading global player in maritime manufacturing with the announcement of 2 mega commercial shipyards. With a combined investment of ₹30,000 crore, these shipyards are expected to generate 55,000 jobs and bring transformative growth to the state’s maritime infrastructure.

₹30,000 Crore Push to Strengthen Maritime Presence

At the Transforming Maritime Sector event held on September 20,2025, Tamil Nadu formalised agreements for 2 global-scale shipyards. Cochin Shipyard Limited will invest ₹15,000 crore to build a commercial shipyard, generating 10,000 jobs, of which 4,000 direct and 6,000 indirect in its initial phase. Simultaneously, Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited is set to invest another ₹15,000 crore, establishing a facility targeting over 45,000 jobs, of which 5,000 will be direct and 40,000 indirect.

Strategic Focus Amid Geo-Political Climate

Industries Minister TRB Rajaa highlighted this as a strategic step given the current global geopolitical environment. The state aims to capitalise on maritime demand and position itself as a major industrial and commercial shipbuilding base capable of serving global markets. These investments not only promise employment but are set to boost industrial capacity and innovation in the sector.
