Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) reported an operating profit of more than ₹5,000 crore in the financial year 2024-25. This compares with ₹2,300 crore in the previous year, Union Minister for Communications Jyotiraditya Scindia said on Friday.
The company’s subscriber count increased from 8.7 crore to 9.1 crore during the year. Overall, BSNL is now serving over 22 million users across the country. According to Scindia, this is the first time in recent years that the subscriber numbers have shown an increase.
BSNL’s 4G coverage has expanded significantly. The company had around 9,000 4G sites in June 2023, which has now grown to 98,000. The expansion is part of the company’s larger plan to strengthen its telecom services.
The telecom operator has invested close to ₹25,000 crore in capital expenditure, its highest-ever investment. These funds have been directed towards expanding the 4G network and related infrastructure ahead of a nationwide launch.
The official launch of BSNL’s 4G services is scheduled for Saturday and will be presided over by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The rollout uses fully indigenously developed hardware and software. With this, India joins a group of countries that have built their own telecom stacks.
The government will also launch India’s 100% 4G saturation project under Digital Bharat Nidhi (DBN). So far, nearly 29,000 villages have been connected under this initiative. Telecom Secretary Neeraj Mittal said DBN has played a central role in rural connectivity.
BSNL posted net profits of ₹262 crore in the July-September quarter of 2024 and ₹280 crore in the October-December quarter. These were its first consecutive profitable quarters in 18 years.
