Chennai-headquartered Ashok Leyland, one of India’s largest commercial vehicle manufacturers, announced on Wednesday that it has won a significant order from Tamil Nadu’s State Transport Undertakings (TNSTUs) to supply 1,937 diesel-powered passenger buses. The order underlines the company's continued dominance in the bus manufacturing industry and its long-standing partnership with the Tamil Nadu transport network.
The ₹668.76 crore contract was placed by the Institute of Road Transport, Tamil Nadu, following standard tender norms. Of the total, 1,701 BS VI low-floor fully built buses will be delivered between October 2025 and March 2026, while 236 semi-low-floor buses will be supplied between September 2026 and January 2027.
Ashok Leyland has over 21,000 buses currently operating in the TNSTU fleet, making it one of the most trusted suppliers to the state’s public transport system.
“We are proud to strengthen our long-standing partnership with TNSTUs through this significant order. It reaffirms the trust and confidence customers have in Ashok Leyland’s technology and performance,” said Madhavi Deshmukh, National Sales Head: MHCV, as per the exchange filings.
Echoing the sentiment, Mohan K, “These buses, equipped with advanced safety, technology, and comfort features, will help modernise Tamil Nadu’s public transport and improve passenger experience.”
The new Viking and SETC bus models offer upgraded alternators and batteries to support ITMS power needs, Electronic Stability Control in high-speed models, and auto transmission with air suspension for better ride comfort. The buses also feature wheelchair ramps for enhanced accessibility and semi-low floor designs for easier boarding.

As of October 16, 2025, at 02:20 PM, Ashok Leyland share price is trading at ₹137.50 per share, reflecting a gain of 1.33% from the previous closing price.
With this order, Ashok Leyland continues to solidify its standing as India’s largest and the world’s fourth-largest bus manufacturer, reaffirming its role in advancing safe, sustainable, and technologically advanced public transportation solutions.
