Starlink’s proposed entry into India’s satellite internet market has brought its services into comparison with Reliance Jio, one of the country’s established telecom operators. While both provide internet connectivity, their technologies and target use cases seem to differ widely. As a result, Starlink could compete with Jio in certain broadband segments.

In this article we explore the extent of competition on factors such as pricing, service availability, and customer requirements.

While Jio’s proposed satellite network could extend its reach to underserved areas, it may also bring the company into competition with Starlink, depending on pricing, service availability, and customer requirements.

Whether Starlink will be an upcoming competitor to Jio will ultimately depend on Starlink’s commercial rollout in India and the reach of both companies’ services to mass audience.

Here's a look at how these two compare:

1. Technology Behind Jio and Starlink

One of the key differences between Reliance Jio and Starlink lies in the technologies they use to deliver internet connectivity. Jio’s existing mobile and fibre broadband services rely on terrestrial infrastructure, including cellular towers and physical fibre-optic cables, while Starlink, operated by SpaceX, uses a network of low-Earth-orbit (LEO) satellites to provide broadband connectivity through specialised user terminals.

However, Jio is also planning to expand beyond its terrestrial network. As per India Today report, the company has proposed a satellite network comprising around 1,600 LEO satellites and 23 ground stations, intended to complement its existing mobile and fibre infrastructure and extend connectivity to remote and underserved areas.

2. Monthly Costs and Initial Setup Expenses in India

Pricing is an important factor when comparing Starlink and Jio, particularly in Indian market where mobile data plans are widely available at relatively low prices. Jio offers mobile internet plans across different price points.

According to previous media reports, Starlink's satellite broadband service involves a monthly subscription that would cost around ₹3,000– ₹4,200 per month, plus the price of the hardware, which can add to the initial cost of access.

The official Indian commercial pricing of Starlink by SpaceX has not been confirmed, as final security clearances and spectrum allocations are still underway. The cost difference may influence which service users choose, depending on their location, budget, and internet requirements.

Where Could Satellite Broadband Challenge Traditional Networks?

Although Jio and Starlink rely on different technologies, their services could overlap in certain broadband segments as Jio explores satellite connectivity alongside its existing networks. The extent of competition will largely depend on regulatory approvals and commercial availability.

Key Details of Jio IPO

The Jio Platforms IPO is expected to open on October 21, 2026, and close on October 23, 2026. As per news reports, tentative listing date is October 28, 2026.

The pricing is expected to be in range from ₹1,150 to ₹1,220 per share. The anchor book will kick off the IPO process on October 19, 2026.

Conclusion

Starlink’s entry into India adds a new dimension to the country’s broadband market, where Reliance Jio already has an established presence. While Jio is expanding its connectivity strategy to include satellite services, Starlink’s market position will depend on regulatory approvals, commercial pricing, and service availability.
