Amazon announced a reduction of 500 to 700 staff in its Indian operations, marking the latest step in a worldwide restructuring plan that targets more than 16,000 roles across the company, as per Inc42 report.

Amazon Layoffs Impact 500 to 700 Staff in India

The layoffs were reported across Amazon’s offices in Chennai, Hyderabad and Bengaluru. Sources estimate the number of affected employees to be between 500 and 700, with software development engineer (SDE) positions experiencing the highest number of exits. The move follows a similar round of cuts in November when up to 1,500 roles were eliminated.

Details of Affected Departments

Tech and human resources teams were the most heavily impacted. In addition to SDE roles, employees in Prime Video, Q&A devices, retail stores and Amazon Web Services (AWS) faced reductions. The November round also saw mid‑senior and senior staff let go, indicating a focus on higher‑level positions.

Company Response and Support Measures

Amazon did not comment directly but referenced an internal note from senior vice president Beth Galetti, who oversees people experience and technology. The note explained that the restructuring aims to reduce layers, increase ownership and remove bureaucracy.

Affected staff will receive severance pay, outplacement services and health insurance benefits as per local regulations. The company also stated that hiring will continue in strategic areas and that the changes do not signal frequent large‑scale cuts.

Conclusion

The latest layoff round reduces Amazon’s Indian workforce by 500 to 700 employees, primarily within tech and HR functions. It forms part of a broader global effort to streamline operations, reallocate resources and address evolving business priorities.
