In light of escalating operational expenses, Air India and Air India Express plans to initiate a ₹399 fuel surcharge on all domestic tickets from March 12, driven by the sharp surge in aviation turbine fuel (ATF) prices attributed to regional geopolitical tensions, as per PTI reports.

Fuel Surcharge Details for Domestic and International Routes

Air India has announced a phased incorporation of a fuel surcharge, beginning with domestic flight tickets, which will see an increment of ₹399 each.

This surcharge extends internationally, notably affecting flights to SAARC destinations and others, marking a significant response to increased fuel prices.

Surcharge Implementation on International Routes

The surcharge extends to international routes, impacting the pricing of tickets to various regions. Flights to West Asia will incur an additional $10 surcharge per ticket.

Furthermore, routes to Africa will see an increase in surcharge from $30 to $90, reflecting the broader impact of fuel cost increases.

Additions to Southeast Asia Routes

For Southeast Asia flights, the new surcharge will rise by $20, reaching $60 per ticket. This adjustment includes flights to Singapore, an area previously exempt from such charges, further indicating Air India's comprehensive approach in adapting to fluctuating operational costs.

Conclusion

Air India's decision to levy this fuel surcharge highlights the reactive measures employed by airlines in response to the rising ATF prices. The phased surcharge is an essential step for the airline's financial adjustments during these geopolitically challenging times.
