The government has released ₹17,744 crore as the first instalment for the wage component under Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act, reinforcing its commitment to timely payments and rural liquidity support. The move comes at a time when wage stability and employment continuity remain critical for rural households.

According to the Ministry of Rural Development, demand for work under the scheme has remained stable so far this year, despite seasonal fluctuations typically seen across states.

Wage Payments Continue, Revision Expected Soon

The government has clarified that existing wage rates under MGNREGA will continue for now, ensuring uninterrupted payments to workers. However, revised wage rates under the proposed VB-GRAM G Act, 2025, are expected to be notified in the coming days.

Officials noted that the scheme will remain fully operational until the new framework is rolled out, safeguarding demand-based employment and timely wage disbursement. Additional funds may also be allocated if required to meet rising demand.

Rural Housing and Infrastructure Push

Beyond wage support, the government is accelerating rural development initiatives. Under Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana Gramin, the target is to build 4.95 crore houses by March 2029, with a focus on timely execution and direct benefit transfers.

Meanwhile, road construction under Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana continues to advance, with around 12,100 km of roads sanctioned and currently at the tendering stage to improve rural connectivity.

Transition to New Framework in Pipeline

The government is preparing for a smooth transition to the proposed VB-GRAM G Act, which is expected to bring updated wage structures and operational improvements. The focus remains on ensuring minimal disruption to ongoing employment programmes.
