The Assam government has announced a ₹30 increase in the daily wage of tea garden workers, effective April 1, 2026, as per PTI reports. This change applies to workers in both estate and small tea gardens across the state, which is the largest tea producer in India.

Details of the Wage Increase

Following the Minimum Wages Advisory Board's recommendation on February 26, 2026, the Governor of Assam approved an interim wage hike of ₹30 for tea plantation workers. This adjustment will take effect from April 1, 2026, as per the official notification issued on March 7.

In the Brahmaputra valley, workers will see their daily wages rise from ₹250 to ₹280. Meanwhile, in the Barak valley, the daily wage will increase from ₹228 to ₹258. This wage adjustment is applicable to workers in both estate and small tea gardens in these regions.

Background and Previous Wage Hike

The last wage increase for Assam's tea garden workers was ₹18, implemented in October 2023. The recent decision to raise wages by ₹30 was made during a tripartite meeting on February 26, 2026, involving the state government, tea garden labour unions, and garden owners.

Future Wage Discussions

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma indicated that with the implementation of new Labour Codes by the Centre, further wage discussions may occur within the next 6 months.

He suggested that the final daily wages for tea garden workers could exceed ₹300 after these discussions.

Conclusion

The Assam government's decision to increase the daily wage of tea garden workers by ₹30 reflects ongoing efforts to improve the livelihood of workers in the state's significant tea industry. This adjustment impacts both estate and small tea gardens, ensuring a more equitable wage structure across the region.
