Launched in May 2016, the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) aims to provide deposit-free LPG connections to adult women belonging to economically disadvantaged households. As of 1 November 2025, the scheme has enabled over 10.33 crore LPG connections across India, significantly expanding access to clean cooking fuel.
To ensure universal access, the Government has approved 25 lakh additional LPG connections for the financial year 2025–26. These will help clear pending applications and further saturate LPG coverage nationwide.
To support sustained LPG usage among PMUY beneficiaries, the Government introduced a targeted subsidy of ₹200 per 14.2 kg cylinder in May 2022, which was later increased to ₹300 per cylinder. For FY 2025–26, PMUY consumers can avail a ₹300 subsidy on up to 9 refills of 14.2 kg cylinders each year (proportionately applicable for 5 kg cylinders).
LPG usage and consumption patterns are closely monitored through MIS reports, PPAC data, and Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs). Independent studies have consistently shown that PMUY has had a transformative impact on rural households, especially women.

By shifting households away from solid fuels such as wood, dung, and crop residue, PMUY has significantly reduced indoor air pollution. This has led to better respiratory health for women and children, who are disproportionately exposed to smoke from traditional cooking methods.
Women in rural and remote regions traditionally spend hours collecting firewood and preparing traditional fuel. LPG access has alleviated this burden, freeing up time for education, income-generating work, and other productive activities.
Reduced dependence on firewood and biomass contributes to decreased deforestation and environmental degradation. Cleaner energy usage not only benefits households but also supports broader ecological sustainability.
With easy-to-use LPG connections, families can cook a wider variety of nutritious meals more efficiently. This contributes to better dietary habits and overall family health.
