The Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana (PMBJP) continues to expand its role in improving access to affordable healthcare across India. The scheme operates through a growing network of Jan Aushadhi Kendras that provide high‑quality generic medicines at significantly lower prices.

With substantial savings offered to citizens, PMBJP has become a key pillar in reducing out‑of‑pocket healthcare expenses nationwide. The government’s focus on scaling up the network highlights its commitment to inclusive and equitable healthcare delivery.

Expanding Access Through Jan Aushadhi Kendras

Over 18,000 Jan Aushadhi Kendras currently operate across the country, supplying generic medicines at discounts ranging between 50% and 80% compared to branded alternatives. These outlets aim to bridge affordability gaps by offering essential drugs at accessible prices to patients.

The government has also set an ambitious target to expand the network to 25,000 Kendras by March 2027. This expansion is designed to strengthen availability in rural and remote regions through a franchise-based model that supports wider geographic penetration.

Incentives to Promote Inclusive Entrepreneurship

The scheme includes targeted incentives to encourage participation from underrepresented groups such as women, SC/ST entrepreneurs, Divyangjan and veterans. Eligible beneficiaries can receive financial support of up to ₹2 lakh to establish new Kendras.

These incentives aim to promote inclusive entrepreneurship and ensure that essential healthcare services are made available in underserved areas. By offering financial backing, the programme removes entry barriers and fosters broader community-led participation.

Initiatives Supporting Women’s Health and Digital Access

PMBJP also promotes health equity through initiatives such as Jan Aushadhi Suvidha sanitary napkins, priced affordably at ₹1 per pad. This initiative addresses menstrual hygiene gaps, especially in low-income and rural populations.

Alongside this, the Sugam mobile application offers digital access to product availability, store locations and price information. These tools enhance transparency and empower citizens to access affordable medicines with greater ease.

Conclusion

The Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana has emerged as a major driver of affordable healthcare access in India. With thousands of Kendras offering substantially lower-priced generic medicines, the scheme continues to reduce financial burden on households.

Targeted incentives promote inclusive entrepreneurship and wider participation in delivering essential healthcare services. As expansion progresses, PMBJP is positioned to strengthen both affordability and accessibility across India’s healthcare system.
