Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced a new initiative to train 1 crore young people in artificial intelligence (AI) skills over the next year, as per The PTI news report.  

This move is part of the government's broader strategy to prioritise youth skilling and advance India's development goals. 

AI Training Initiative Details 

During his Independence Day address from the Red Fort, PM Modi declared the government's decision to provide AI training to 10 million youth. This initiative marks a substantial expansion from existing AI skilling efforts.  

As of June 30,2026, so far 53,449 candidates had enrolled in AI-related job roles under PMKVY 4.0, with 25,466 certified. The Ministry of Skill Development has not yet conducted a specific assessment of AI skill demand or the gap in trained workers. 

Opportunities in Emerging Sectors 

Modi emphasised the importance of youth in achieving the goal of Viksit Bharat, highlighting initiatives like Startup India, Skill India, and the National Education Policy. He noted growth in sectors such as the bioeconomy and electric vehicles, which have opened new employment avenues.

Expansion in Aviation and Sports 

The Prime Minister also discussed the expansion of the aviation sector, with new airports and routes creating demand for skilled manpower in areas like aircraft maintenance. In sports, opportunities have expanded beyond being an athlete, with infrastructure, coaching, and sports medicine offering new employment paths. 

Nationwide Talent Hunt 

Modi announced a nationwide talent hunt for children aged 5 to 15 years, aiming to identify sporting talent for specialised training. This initiative seeks to enhance India's competitiveness in the 2036 Olympics.
