The PM-KISAN scheme is a central sector initiative launched in February 2019 by the Hon’ble Prime Minister to provide financial assistance to farmers owning cultivable land. Under this scheme, eligible farmers receive an annual benefit of ₹6,000, disbursed in three equal instalments directly into their Aadhaar-linked bank accounts via Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT). The key eligibility criterion is cultivable landholding, subject to certain exclusions for farmers with higher economic status.
A farmer-centric digital infrastructure ensures that benefits reach all eligible farmers across the country without intermediaries. Maintaining complete transparency in registration and verification, the Government of India has disbursed over ₹4.09 lakh crore through 21 instalments since the scheme began.
The Farmer ID is mandatory only for new registrations in 19 states where the farmer registry is operational. In states where the registry has not yet started, farmers can register without a Farmer ID.
To address challenges such as name mismatches across documents due to procedural variations, the government has enabled multiple registration modes, including self-registration through mobile and web applications.
A grievance mechanism is also in place to help farmers resolve issues related to land records or name discrepancies, allowing them to obtain a Farmer ID.
To ensure that farmers without mobile phones can also access benefits, the government provides support through Common Service Centres (CSCs) and state government offices at Block and Tehsil levels. These facilities help farmers avail themselves of scheme benefits and digital services without any hurdles.
