The Ministry of Corporate Affairs has widened eligibility under the Prime Minister Internship Scheme during its pilot phase. Final-year undergraduate and postgraduate students are now permitted to apply for internships under the programme.

The move is intended to enhance practical exposure and improve workforce readiness among students nearing course completion. The update was announced through an official government statement on Wednesday.

Expansion Of Eligibility Criteria

The revised guidelines now allow students in their final academic year to participate in the Prime Minister Internship Scheme. Earlier, the programme primarily targeted graduates and non-final-year students meeting specific criteria.

The ministry clarified that applicants must continue to meet all existing eligibility conditions outlined for the scheme. Final-year students are required to ensure that participation does not disrupt their academic commitments.

Requirement Of Institutional Approval

Applicants from final-year courses must submit a no-objection certificate from their educational institutions. The document must confirm that the internship will not interfere with academic or examination requirements.

The certificate can be issued by authorised officials, including heads of departments, deans, principals, or training and placement officers. This requirement is intended to maintain coordination between educational institutions and participating companies.

Alignment With National Education Policy Goals

The ministry stated that the change aligns with the objectives of India’s National Education Policy. The policy places emphasis on experiential learning, internships, and industry exposure as integral components of higher education.

By allowing final-year students to participate, the scheme supports early integration into professional environments. The update also reflects a policy focus on bridging academic frameworks with real-world industry practices.

Scheme Structure And Financial Support

The Prime Minister Internship Scheme is designed to provide hands-on industry experience across multiple sectors. Interns under the programme receive a minimum financial assistance of ₹9,000 per month.

More than 300 companies have participated in the pilot phase, offering internship roles across diverse industries. The scheme is open to Indian citizens aged between 18 and 25 years, with applications accepted through the official portal.

Conclusion

The expansion of eligibility under the Prime Minister Internship Scheme marks a policy adjustment during its pilot phase. Allowing final-year undergraduate and postgraduate students aims to improve job readiness through practical exposure.

Mandatory institutional approval ensures academic requirements remain unaffected during participation. Overall, the update strengthens the scheme’s role in linking higher education with industry experience.
