The Ministry of Tourism has sanctioned 53 tourism development projects under Swadesh Darshan 2.0, with a total allocation of ₹2,208.31 crore.  

These projects aim to enhance infrastructure while integrating environmental sustainability, local community participation, and responsible tourism practices across various states and union territories. 

Swadesh Darshan 2.0 Project Sanctions 

The scheme, launched in 2022, prioritises sustainable and responsible tourism by embedding principles of environmental, socio-cultural, and economic sustainability.  

Projects include use of renewable energy, eco-friendly materials, accessible infrastructure, and awareness campaigns for tourists. Consultation with local stakeholders is mandatory during project design and implementation. 

Challenge Based Destination Development Initiative 

Under Swadesh Darshan 2.0, 38 projects worth ₹698 crore have been sanctioned under the Challenge Based Destination Development initiative.  

This component focuses on holistic destination development across the entire tourist value chain, including sanitation, safety, and community benefit models. 

National Strategy and Travel for LiFE 

The Ministry has released a National Strategy for Sustainable Tourism to align sectoral growth with carbon neutrality and resource efficiency.  

The ‘Travel for LiFE’ programme, part of Mission LiFE, aims to encourage tourists and businesses to adopt nature-aligned practices in tourism operations. 

Application and Oversight 

State Governments and UT Administrations submit project proposals for funding. The Ministry reviews progress regularly and encourages robust operational management to ensure benefits reach local communities. All projects must comply with guidelines on sustainability, safety, and community engagement.
