The Employees' State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) has extended the Atal Beemit Vyakti Kalyan Yojana (ABVKY) by one year, allowing eligible insured employees who lose their jobs to continue receiving unemployment assistance until June 30, 2027. The scheme, which was set to expire on June 30, 2026, offers temporary financial support to workers covered under the Employees' State Insurance (ESI) scheme while they search for new employment.

The extension was approved during the 198th ESIC meeting, chaired by Union Labour and Employment Minister Mansukh Mandaviya. The renewed scheme will remain in effect from July 1, 2026, to June 30, 2027.

What is the Atal BeemitVyakti Kalyan Yojana?

The Atal Beemit Vyakti Kalyan Yojana is an unemployment relief scheme for employees covered under the Employees' State Insurance (ESI) Act. It provides temporary financial assistance to insured workers who lose their jobs, helping them manage expenses during periods of unemployment.

Employees can claim benefits under the scheme if they meet the eligibility conditions prescribed by ESIC. The unemployment allowance under ABVKY is an ESIC benefit and is separate from the benefits available under the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO).

ESIC vs EPFO: Understanding the Difference

While both ESIC and EPFO provide social security benefits to organised sector employees, their objectives differ.

ESIC primarily offers medical care, sickness, maternity, disability, and unemployment benefits to insured workers. In contrast, EPFO focuses on retirement savings through the Provident Fund (PF), Employees' Pension Scheme (EPS), and Employees' Deposit Linked Insurance (EDLI). Unlike ESIC, EPFO does not provide unemployment assistance.

Other Decisions Taken by ESIC

In addition to extending the ABVKY scheme, ESIC approved several measures to strengthen its healthcare and administrative network. These include direct management of upcoming ESIC hospitals, integration of AYUSH services through a memorandum of understanding with the Ministry of Ayush, the establishment of five new sub-regional offices, and the setting up of a medical college in Haridwar and a dental college in New Delhi. ESIC also approved the Employees' State Insurance (General) Regulations, 2026, under the Code on Social Security, 2020.

Conclusion

The extension of the Atal Beemit Vyakti Kalyan Yojana ensures that eligible ESIC-insured employees who lose their jobs can continue to receive temporary financial assistance until June 30, 2027. The move provides continuity of support during unemployment while also reflecting ESIC's ongoing efforts to strengthen its social security and healthcare framework.
