In a major step toward cleaner air and healthier living, the Delhi government has announced that it will extend the Ujjwala Yojana to households in slum clusters.
The initiative, led by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, aims to reduce indoor pollution by replacing traditional stoves and coal-fired heaters with LPG connections for families still reliant on solid fuels.
The Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB) has been directed to conduct a citywide survey to identify homes that continue to use firewood, kerosene, or coal for cooking. Once the data is compiled, eligible families will receive LPG connections under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY).
As per the news reports, Officials explained that extending the Ujjwala scheme will target one of the lesser-addressed causes of Delhi’s pollution, domestic smoke from cooking. Teams from various civic departments, including PWD, DSIIDC, and municipal bodies, have been mobilised to support the initiative through coordinated cleanliness and dust-reduction measures.
Alongside the LPG rollout, the Delhi government has intensified cleaning operations across the city. Road-sweeping vans, water sprinklers, and mechanical dust suppression systems have been deployed to tackle particulate matter and road dust. Urban local bodies have been instructed to use all available sanitation resources to maintain cleaner streets and open spaces.
