The Delhi government has reportedly approved a scheme to provide financial assistance for cooking gas to ration card-holding families during Holi and Diwali each year, as per PTI report. The decision was cleared by the state cabinet on Tuesday and will be implemented starting with Holi this year.
The benefit will be given through direct cash transfer instead of supplying physical LPG cylinders. The government said this approach will allow families to decide when they want to buy a refill.
Under the scheme, ₹853 will be transferred to the Aadhaar-linked bank account of the head of each eligible family. The amount is equal to the current price of a domestic LPG cylinder in Delhi.
The money can be used to purchase a gas cylinder at any time. The transfer will be made on both Holi and Diwali every year, even if a family has already booked or used a refill during the same period.
Around 17.5 lakh ration card–holding families in Delhi are expected to benefit from the scheme annually. The government clarified that all ration card holders will be eligible, regardless of whether they use LPG or piped natural gas for cooking.
Households covered under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana will receive ₹553 per cylinder. These families already get a ₹300 subsidy from the central government. Other eligible ration card holders will receive the full ₹853 amount.
The estimated annual cost of the scheme is about ₹243 crore. The expenditure will be met from the Delhi government’s budget. Officials said routing the benefit directly to bank accounts is intended to ensure that the assistance reaches eligible households without delays.

With cabinet approval now in place, the Delhi government plans to begin cash transfers for LPG support from Holi this year, making it a regular festival-related benefit for eligible ration card holders.
