In a major boost for the future of artificial intelligence, OpenAI and NVIDIA today unveiled a strategic partnership focused on scaling the infrastructure required to train and operate OpenAI’s next generation of models, as per the news reports.
The agreement envisions deploying 10 GW of NVIDIA-powered compute systems, backed by a potential $100 billion investment from NVIDIA to cover systems, data centres, and energy requirements.
The deployment will begin in the second half of 2026, starting with the NVIDIA Vera Rubin platform. Under the agreement, NVIDIA will serve as OpenAI’s preferred partner for compute and networking, while both companies will align their hardware and software roadmaps to optimise performance and efficiency for future models.
This collaboration builds on years of joint work between the two companies. From the first DGX supercomputer to the development of ChatGPT, OpenAI has consistently relied on NVIDIA’s platforms to power its innovations.
As per the news reports, Jensen Huang, founder and CEO of NVIDIA, commented: “NVIDIA and OpenAI have pushed each other for a decade, from the first DGX supercomputer to the breakthrough of ChatGPT. This investment and infrastructure partnership mark the next leap forward — deploying 10 gigawatts to power the next era of intelligence.”
Sam Altman, cofounder and CEO of OpenAI, said, “Everything starts with compute. Compute infrastructure will be the basis for the economy of the future, and we will utilise what we’re building with NVIDIA to both create new AI breakthroughs and empower people and businesses with them at scale.”
This agreement complements OpenAI’s existing collaborations with Microsoft, Oracle, SoftBank, and Stargate partners, all focused on building cutting-edge AI infrastructure. With over 700 million weekly active users and widespread adoption by enterprises, small businesses, and developers, OpenAI sees this partnership as critical to advancing its mission of creating artificial general intelligence for the benefit of humanity.
