OpenAI has made an unexpected move into the media space by acquiring TBPN, a technology-focused talk show known for hosting high-profile industry leaders, as per The Reuters report. The development comes as the company intensifies competition in the enterprise AI segment.
OpenAI has acquired TBPN, an online talk show launched in late 2024 by entrepreneurs John Coogan and Jordi Hays.
The platform gained traction in Silicon Valley for its in-depth interviews with technology leaders and had set out to compete with established media outlets such as CNBC.
As part of the deal, both founders will join OpenAI. While the financial terms of the acquisition have not been disclosed, the company indicated that the move is aimed at strengthening how it communicates its strategy and engages with broader discussions around artificial intelligence.
OpenAI noted that integrating media within larger organisations is not uncommon, citing examples such as traditional broadcast networks within conglomerates, Microsoft’s association with MSNBC and Bloomberg News operating under Bloomberg LP. The company also stated that TBPN will continue to function with editorial independence.
The acquisition comes at a time when OpenAI is competing with Anthropic for enterprise customers, making communication and positioning increasingly important. Interestingly, the company had not previously signalled any plans to enter the media or news space.
The move also follows internal strategic adjustments, including the decision to shelve its Sora video-generation tool as it focuses more heavily on the growing market for AI coding tools.
At the same time, OpenAI has faced criticism over its agreement with the US government to allow the use of its technology in classified military operations. This development has drawn attention amid broader tensions involving Anthropic and US authorities.
TBPN has built a strong following by featuring conversations with influential figures across technology and media. Its guest list includes Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, filmmaker James Cameron and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.
The platform’s positioning and audience base have made it a notable voice in Silicon Valley, particularly for discussions around innovation and leadership in the technology sector.
