OpenAI Acquires Software Applications Inc. to Enhance ChatGPT Desktop Integration

In a move that deepens its efforts to expand AI usability beyond text-based interactions, OpenAI has acquired Software Applications Inc., a startup founded in 2023 by former Apple engineers known for their work on the iPhone’s Shortcuts app, as per the news reports. 

The acquisition is aimed at enhancing ChatGPT’s ability to interact with desktop environments, allowing it to take actions on behalf of users rather than merely responding to prompts.

Integration and Strategic Vision

Following the acquisition, Software Applications’ entire 12-member team will join OpenAI, with plans to integrate its Mac-based interface technology into ChatGPT. Financial details of the transaction were not disclosed.

The deal comes amid OpenAI’s aggressive expansion strategy, following its $1.1 billion acquisition of Statsig and $6.5 billion purchase of an AI hardware startup co-founded by former Apple design chief Jony Ive. Both earlier deals were all-stock transactions.

Nick Turley, who leads OpenAI’s ChatGPT division, said he was “blown away” by Software Applications’ AI assistant prototype, Sky, which overlays the Mac desktop to interpret on-screen context and assist users.

About Software Applications and Sky Assistant

Software Applications had raised $6.5 million from investors, including OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Figma’s Dylan Field. Its flagship product, Sky, was built to serve as an intelligent desktop assistant capable of answering questions and taking actions directly based on what’s visible on the user’s screen. Though not yet public, Sky is seen as a natural fit for OpenAI’s vision of an AI agent ecosystem.
