In a move that underscores the escalating global race for artificial intelligence infrastructure, Anthropic has entered into a major cloud and chip partnership with Google, as per the news reports.
The arrangement aims to provide the AI startup with massive computing capacity through Google’s custom Tensor Processing Units (TPUs), significantly expanding its resources for training and deploying advanced AI models.
Announced on Thursday, the partnership marks one of the largest AI infrastructure commitments in recent years, as Google prepares to deploy over 1 gigawatt of TPU capacity by 2026. These custom-built chips, designed to accelerate machine learning workloads, will bolster Anthropic’s computing ecosystem amid surging global demand for AI hardware.
While financial details remain undisclosed, both firms confirmed the expansion of their long-standing alliance. The deal reflects Google’s growing role as both a strategic investor and infrastructure backbone for AI innovation.
“Anthropic and Google have a longstanding partnership, and this latest expansion will help us continue to grow the compute we need to define the frontier of AI,” said Krishna Rao, Chief Financial Officer of Anthropic, as per the news reports.
By gaining access to Google’s TPUs, Anthropic will tap into one of the most advanced chip infrastructures beyond Nvidia’s GPU ecosystem, helping reduce its dependence on expensive and limited GPU resources.
The move also signals Anthropic’s growing confidence in Google’s AI-specialised cloud architecture, solidifying Google’s standing as the third-largest global cloud provider, behind Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Microsoft Azure.
Google has invested $3 billion in Anthropic to date, $2 billion in 2023 and an additional $1 billion earlier this year. Meanwhile, Amazon has pledged up to $8 billion and provides its proprietary AI chips through AWS. Both tech giants play dual roles as investors and compute partners, with Anthropic relying on their infrastructure to train its Claude family of large language models (LLMs), which directly competes with OpenAI’s GPT and Google’s Gemini systems.
