The Walt Disney Company has announced a $1 billion investment in OpenAI as part of a wide-ranging partnership designed to integrate Disney’s characters and creative universe into Sora, OpenAI’s AI-based video generation tool, as per news reports.
The 3-year licensing deal marks the entertainment giant’s first major collaboration with an artificial intelligence platform and represents a strategic shift in how Disney engages with generative technologies.
Under the agreement, Sora will gain rights to generate short-form, user-prompted videos featuring more than 200 Disney, Pixar, Marvel and Star Wars characters.
The platform will also include access to Disney’s collection of costumes, vehicles, props and environments, enabling users to create original clips that blend storytelling and fan engagement.
A curated selection of these AI-generated fan videos will be streamed on Disney+, marking the first time the studio’s intellectual property will be used at scale on an external AI platform.
The deal makes Disney the first major content licensor for Sora and highlights its evolving stance on AI tools, following prior legal actions against unauthorised use of its characters.
As part of the partnership, Disney will also become a major OpenAI enterprise customer, using its APIs to build new tools, digital products and storytelling features across its business divisions, including Disney+.
OpenAI’s ChatGPT Images feature will gain limited rights to generate Disney-themed imagery, excluding any talent likenesses or voice reproductions.
Both companies have emphasised safeguards for rights protection, safe use of AI tools and measures to prevent misuse or illegal content generation. Disney will also receive warrants for potential equity purchases in OpenAI as part of the investment structure.
