Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE), a state-run defence shipyard, announced today on June 11, 2025, that it has signed a contract with the Geological Survey of India (GSI) to build two coastal research vessels (CRVs). The Garden Reach Shipbuilders contract supports geological and oceanographic research in India’s coastal waters.
Each vessel will be 64 metres long and 12 metres wide, with a deadweight tonnage of about 450 tonnes. They will feature an endurance of 15 days and a top speed of 10 knots. The vessels are designed to accommodate 35 personnel onboard, according to the company.
The company said the vessels will enable offshore geological mapping, mineral exploration (including dredging), ocean environment monitoring and research. They will be fitted with modern scientific laboratories to support data processing and sample analysis.
According to GRSE, "These platforms will be fitted with Dynamic Positioning - 1 to enable them to maintain position even in Sea State 3. Powered by diesel-electric propulsion, with diesel generators driving the thrusters, these ships would operate within the exclusive economic zone of India, in depths of 5-1,000 metre," These specifications are designed to meet the operational requirements of the Geological Survey of India.
GRSE is currently building an ocean research vessel (ORV) for the National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research under the Ministry of Earth Sciences. It is also working on an acoustic research ship for the Naval Physical and Oceanographic Laboratory, which operates under the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).
The company is simultaneously building 16 warships across four different classes for the Indian Navy. It has also emerged as the lowest bidder for the Navy's Next Generation Corvettes (NGC) programme and expects to be awarded the contract to build five of these vessels. Additionally, GRSE is constructing eight multi-purpose cargo ships for a German firm.
On June 11, 2025, Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers share price opened at ₹3,246.00, up from the previous close of ₹3,235.40. At the end of the trading session, the stock was trading at ₹3,095.00, down ₹140.40 (-4.34%) on the NSE. The stock’s 52-week high of ₹3,532.20 was recorded on June 5, 2025, while its 52-week low of ₹1,184.90 occurred on March 3, 2025.
The contract to construct two coastal research vessels for the GSI strengthens GRSE’s position in the field of scientific and research vessel manufacturing. With its expanding portfolio of defence and commercial projects, the shipyard continues to contribute significantly to India’s maritime research and naval capabilities.
