WhatsApp Adds Bill Payments in India Covering Electricity, Gas, Water and More

Paying a monthly bill on WhatsApp is now becoming possible for users in India. The messaging platform has introduced a bill payments feature that lets users find, manage and pay household and utility bills without moving to another app.
The service runs on the Bharat Connect (BBPS) network and covers 22,722 billers across 30 categories.
Bills Can Be Managed From WhatsApp
Users can reach the new service through the ₹ icon at the top of the WhatsApp home screen. From there, they can select a biller, enter the required account details and review the bill fetched on the platform.
The feature covers common payments such as electricity, gas, water and FASTag, along with insurance, credit cards and loan repayments.
Previous Bills Can Be Easier To Find
WhatsApp is also adding some features aimed at making repeat payments simpler. Bills from billers that a user has previously paid through the feature will be pre-fetched and shown on the Payments Home page.
Multiple accounts can also be kept under the same biller. This means users can manage separate bills for their home, office or family from one place.
The Payments Home page will surface commonly used categories, while a "See All" option provides access to the wider list.
UPI And Cards Are Supported
Once the bill amount and other details are checked, users can select a payment option. The methods listed by WhatsApp include UPI, debit cards and credit cards.
Arun Srinivas, Managing Director and Country Head, Meta India, said the aim is to reduce the need for people to move between different apps or keep track of several payment services.
Rollout Will Happen Gradually
WhatsApp said the bill payment facility is being rolled out gradually across India. It is expected to reach Android and iOS users over the coming weeks.
