Uttar Pradesh is set to strengthen its tourism offerings by introducing technology-enabled double-decker food trucks that showcase the state's rich culinary heritage. Spearheaded by the Uttar Pradesh Eco Tourism Development Board (UPETDB), the initiative aims to blend regional cuisine with immersive digital experiences, positioning food as a key tourism attraction. The project follows Lucknow's recognition as a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy and is expected to create new opportunities for local food entrepreneurs while enhancing visitor experiences.

UPETDB Invites Bids for Double-Decker Food Trucks

The Uttar Pradesh Eco Tourism Development Board has invited bids from private operators to design, build, operate, and maintain the food trucks. In the first phase, the buses will be stationed at Nawab Wajid Ali Shah Zoological Garden and Dr Ram Manohar Lohia Park in Lucknow.

Interested bidders can submit applications through the UP e-tender portal until 6 pm on July 24, 2026, while detailed tender documents are available on the UPETDB website. The selected operator will receive a 10-year concession, with the option of a 10-year extension based on performance.

AR, VR and Local Cuisine to Enhance Tourist Experience

Unlike conventional food courts, the double-decker buses are designed as mobile tourism attractions. The lower deck will feature a modern commercial kitchen serving hygienic, freshly prepared regional dishes, while the upper deck will offer an immersive visitor lounge equipped with augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) technology.

Visitors will be able to explore Uttar Pradesh's monuments, wildlife destinations, cultural landmarks, and tourism circuits through digital heritage galleries, LED storytelling, and immersive audio experiences while enjoying local cuisine.

The initiative will also promote the One District One Cuisine (ODOC) programme alongside One District One Product (ODOP) food items, highlighting district-specific recipes and traditional culinary practices.

Sustainability and Local Employment at the Core

The project places strong emphasis on sustainability and digital infrastructure. The buses will feature solar panels, AI-enabled CCTV surveillance, digital billing systems, QR code-based feedback, UPI and card payment facilities, LED displays, and bio-toilets.

To reduce environmental impact, single-use plastics will be prohibited, with food served in biodegradable packaging such as bamboo, clay, or leaf plates. The project also mandates waste segregation, zero-liquid discharge systems, and daily sanitation around the vehicles.

Conclusion

The double-decker food truck initiative reflects Uttar Pradesh's strategy to combine tourism, technology, and local entrepreneurship into a single visitor experience. By promoting regional cuisines through the One District One Cuisine initiative and leveraging immersive digital technology, the state aims to strengthen its position as a gastronomic tourism destination while creating new economic opportunities for local chefs, self-help groups, and food businesses.
