The US-India Business Council (USIBC) has established the US-India Critical Minerals Security Taskforce to promote deeper collaboration between businesses from both countries in strategic mineral sectors, as per news reports.

The initiative comes as India and the United States seek to reduce supply chain vulnerabilities and secure access to minerals that are increasingly important for energy transition and advanced manufacturing.

Taskforce Holds Inaugural Meeting

The taskforce held its first meeting on June 4, 2026, having together 17 leading companies from India and the United States.

Participants discussed opportunities for collaboration across mineral processing, manufacturing, technology development, and investments within the critical minerals ecosystem.

Initiative Builds on Bilateral Minerals Framework

The launch follows the signing of the US-India framework on securing critical minerals and rare earth supply chains by External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on May 26, 2026.

The initiative also aligns with the broader Quad Critical Minerals Initiative, which focuses on strengthening investments in mining, processing, and recycling activities.

Key Focus Areas Identified

The taskforce has identified several priority areas for collaboration, including lithium refining, cathode active materials, feedstock corridors, battery recycling, synthetic graphite production, and rare-earth processing.

Rare-earth magnet manufacturing has also been highlighted as a strategic focus area under the initiative.

4-Pillar Strategy to Drive Collaboration

The platform will operate through 4 key pillars: supply chain security, technology and innovation, investment and finance, and policy and regulation.

These workstreams will emphasis on enhancing cooperation across mining and manufacturing activities, encouraging research and innovation, facilitating investments, and supporting implementation of bilateral agreements.
