India's energy import landscape witnessed a notable shift in May 2026, with the United States becoming the country's largest supplier of both liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and liquefied natural gas (LNG), as per news reports.
The development reflects changing sourcing patterns as India seeks to strengthen energy security and diversify supplies amid disruptions in traditional supply routes.
Imports of LPG from the United States rose significantly during May, reaching 629,000 tonnes, a 63% increase compared with April. This placed the US ahead of long-standing suppliers from West Asia.
In contrast, LPG imports from the United Arab Emirates declined 31% to 112,000 tonnes, while supplies from Saudi Arabia fell 75.5% to 45,000 tonnes during the month.
Iran emerged as the second-largest LPG supplier, with shipments rising to 144,000 tonnes from 67,000 tonnes in April. Prior to the recent regional conflict, India had not been importing LPG from Iran.
The United States also became a major source of LNG for India during the month. LNG imports from the US climbed to a record 907,000 tonnes, representing a 227% increase from April and the highest level recorded so far.
The increase came after supply disruptions affected traditional sourcing patterns. Before the regional conflict began, Qatar accounted for around 45% of India's LNG imports.
However, changes in supply availability encouraged Indian buyers to increase purchases from alternative markets.
Beyond LNG, imports of key petrochemical feedstocks from the US also reached record levels. India imported 314,000 tonnes of butane and 315,000 tonnes of propane from the country during May, both the highest levels on record.

The emergence of the United States as India's leading LPG and LNG supplier underscores a broader transformation in the country's energy sourcing strategy. As demand for cleaner fuels and petrochemical feedstocks continues to rise, diversification of supply sources is expected to remain a key priority for India's energy sector.
