The United States has approved 2 defence-related support proposals for India involving Apache attack helicopters and M777A2 Ultra-Light Howitzers, as per PTI reports. The approvals were announced by the US Department of State through the Foreign Military Sales programme.

The proposed Apache support package is valued at about $198.2 million. The separate proposal linked to M777A2 howitzers is estimated at nearly $230 million.

Apache Support Package

The Apache proposal covers sustainment and support services for India’s AH-64E helicopter fleet. The package includes technical, engineering, and logistics support services required for operations and maintenance.

The Department of State said the proposal also includes personnel training, technical publications and programme support. Contractor and US government support services are part of the package requested by India.

The principal contractors for the Apache-related proposal are Boeing and Lockheed Martin.

Howitzer Sustainment Support

The second proposal relates to long-term support for M777A2 Ultra-Light Howitzers currently used by the Indian armed forces.

According to the Department of State, the package includes spare parts, repair and return services, field service representatives, technical assistance and training support. Logistics and depot-level support services are also included in the proposal.

The principal contractor for the howitzer support package will be BAE Systems, located in Cumbria in the United Kingdom.

Strategic Context

The US administration said the proposed sales are to support its foreign policy and national security objectives by maintaining defence ties with India.

The Department of State described India as an important defence partner in the Indo-Pacific and South Asia regions.

It added that the support packages are to help India maintain readiness and strengthen defence linked to existing platforms.
