India and Norway have signed a triangular development cooperation agreement aimed at supporting human development initiatives across Global South nations, further widening bilateral collaboration between the 2 countries.
Speaking alongside Jonas Gahr Støre, Prime Minister of Norway, Narendra Modi said the agreement would help both countries jointly contribute to development projects linked to India’s digital public infrastructure ecosystem.
The Indian Prime Minister also highlighted growing maritime cooperation between the 2 countries following Norway’s participation in the Indo-Pacific Ocean Initiative.
According to PM Modi, India and Norway will strengthen collaboration in areas including maritime security, marine economy and capacity building.
He further noted that India and Europe are entering a “Golden Era” in bilateral relations despite ongoing global instability and uncertainty.
The leaders also discussed opportunities emerging from the India-EFTA Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement, which Modi described as “historic”.
Under the agreement, India is targeting investments worth $100 billion along with the creation of 1 million jobs over a 15-year period.
During the visit, both countries also moved ahead with a healthcare-focused memorandum of understanding covering digital health, artificial intelligence, research collaboration, advanced healthcare services and health technology.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the two countries agreed to elevate bilateral relations into a Green Strategic Partnership framework.
The upgraded partnership will focus on sectors such as clean energy, renewable energy, circular economy, blue economy, and green transition initiatives.
Discussions between the two sides also covered trade and investment, education, science and technology, Arctic cooperation, AI and space-related collaboration.
The Norwegian Prime Minister said global challenges require stronger cooperation rather than “unilateralism and isolation” and stressed the need to resist the weaponisation of diplomacy, trade and technology.
The 2 leaders additionally exchanged views on regional and international developments during both restricted and delegation-level discussions held in Oslo.
MEA stated that Norway conveyed strong support for India’s efforts in combating terrorism.
PM Modi’s Norway visit forms the fourth leg of his ongoing 5 country diplomatic tour after visits to the UAE, the Netherlands and Sweden. He is also scheduled to attend the third India-Nordic Summit in Oslo.
