The United States is expanding cooperation with India in defence, civil nuclear energy and emerging technologies, US Assistant Secretary of State S. Paul Kapur said during a roundtable on India at the Hoover Institution, as per The Economic Times report.

Former US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and former US Ambassador to India David C. Mulford were among those present at the discussion.

In a statement posted on X, Kapur said the partnership also includes trusted artificial intelligence (AI). He said US engagement with India is helping strengthen supply chains that are considered important for both countries and the wider region.

Defence Cooperation Builds on Existing Framework

Defence remains one of the main areas of engagement between New Delhi and Washington. Last year, both countries signed a defence partnership framework aimed at improving coordination across land, sea, air, space, and cyberspace.

Military cooperation has also grown through defence purchases. Since 2002, India has inducted several US-origin platforms, including Apache attack helicopters, Chinook heavy-lift helicopters, C-17 Globemaster III and C-130J Super Hercules transport aircraft, P-8I maritime patrol aircraft and M777 ultra-light howitzers.

Nuclear Sector Discussions Continue

Civil nuclear energy is another area where engagement has increased. US nuclear power companies have shown interest in India's nuclear sector after the government introduced the SHANTI law, which amended liability-related provisions.

Earlier this year, a delegation of senior executives from the US nuclear industry travelled to India to meet government officials and representatives of the private sector.

The discussions focused on possible business opportunities and future cooperation in civil nuclear projects.

Technology and Supply Chains

Apart from defence and nuclear energy, the two countries are also discussing cooperation in trusted AI and other emerging technologies. According to Kapur, these technologies are expected to support economic activity alongside efforts to strengthen supply chains.

The discussions show agenda between India and the United States, where technology, manufacturing and strategic cooperation continue to feature alongside defence ties.

Conclusion

Defence, civil nuclear energy and technology continue to feature prominently in India-US engagement. Recent discussions and ongoing cooperation reflect the broad areas being pursued by both countries.
