Starting August 1, 2026, Indian Railways will initiate a token system for Tatkal ticket bookings at reservation counters, as per news report.
The West Central Railway zone, a part of the 18 zones within Indian Railways, will oversee this new process. The token system aims to simplify the booking procedure for passengers at reservation windows.
Under the new system, tokens will be issued to passengers before they book Tatkal tickets at reservation counters. Tokens for AC class passengers will be available between 8:30 am and 9:00 am, and non-AC passengers will receive their tokens from 9:00 am to 9:30 am.
Presently, passengers obtain a token and return later to book tickets, but now this process will conclude in a single visit.
Each reservation counter will initially distribute 10 tokens for AC class and 15 tokens for non-AC class. Saurabh Jain, Senior Divisional Commercial Manager from the Kota Division, noted that the number of tokens could be adjusted based on passenger demand.
Once token holders complete their bookings, any remaining Tatkal tickets will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Tokens are categorised into 2 groups: Category A and Category B. Tokens for Category A are for passengers booking tickets for immediate family and are issued before Category B, which includes all other passengers.
Tokens are non-transferable, and tickets are issued only to the individual named on the token.
Passengers should ensure they arrive on time at the reservation counter and carry valid photo identification. The new system promotes a more orderly approach to booking Tatkal tickets, expected to reduce wait times and improve the overall experience for travellers.
Indian Railways is set to implement a token system from August 1, 2026, for Tatkal bookings at reservation counters, with separate token issuance windows for AC and non-AC, initially providing 10 tokens for AC and 15 for non-AC at each counter.
