The Ministry of Railways has approved the construction of a 14.52 km third railway line between Nimpura West Outer Cabin and Midnapur in the South Eastern Railway zone, as per a PIB report.

The project has been sanctioned at a cost of ₹440 crore. The section forms part of the High Utilisation Network (HUN-2), which carries a mix of passenger and freight traffic.

Existing Route Faces Capacity Constraints

The Nimpura West Outer Cabin–Gokulpur section is currently a single-line route, while doubling work is already in progress.

According to the ministry, the section is operating at 115.71% of its line capacity. The third line has been approved to provide additional track capacity on the corridor and support train operations on the route.

Key Freight Corridor

The route records freight loading of around 23.80 million tonnes per annum (MTPA). Passenger trains also operate on the same corridor.

It is used to transport a wide range of commodities, including coal, iron ore, manganese, iron and steel, clinker, pellet iron, cement, petroleum products, limestone, gypsum, fertilisers, wheat, rice, edible oil, containers, ballast, slag, stone, ash and salt.

Additional Capacity Planned

Indian Railways estimates that the third line will enable an additional freight movement of 3.52 MTPA after completion. The added track is expected to ease pressure on the existing network by allowing more trains to operate on the section.

Part of Rail Network Expansion

The approval is part of capacity expansion on high-density railway routes. Similar projects are being taken up on sections where traffic levels have increased beyond the available line capacity.

The focus remains on adding infrastructure to support both passenger operations and freight movement across the railway network.

Conclusion

With an investment of ₹440 crore, the project is intended to boost rail capacity between Nimpura West Outer Cabin and Midnapur. The additional line will support both passenger and freight movement on the corridor.
