The proposals include 12 large language models (LLMs) and eight small language models (SLMs). The government said the mission is to support the development of AI models by Indian startups and research institutions.
The selected proposals include Sarvam AI's 30-billion and 105-billion parameter language models, Gnani.ai's speech-to-speech model, BharatGen's multilingual foundation models, and Avataar AI's video generation model.
Other proposals relate to healthcare, language technologies, and agentic AI. The projects span both general-purpose and domain-specific AI applications.
The IndiaAI Mission consists of seven focus areas, including AI models, datasets, applications, computing infrastructure, talent development, and governance.
The government has empanelled 15 compute service providers, approved 237 projects and allocated 9.3 million GPU hours. The computing capacity is available to startups, educational institutions, and researchers across the country.
The government has also organised 12 AI hackathons and innovation challenges under the mission. According to the minister, these programmes have supported the development of 62 AI prototypes, while 20 AI-based solutions have been deployed for different use cases.
The government said 686 fellowships have been awarded across 178 institutions at undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral levels. More than 2.6 million people have completed the YUVA AI for All programme.
At the infrastructure level, 27 India Data and AI Labs are operational, another 188 are being established, and 58 AI Centres of Excellence have been approved in partnership with state governments and industry.
