UPI Daily Transactions Crossed 800 Million for First Time in September 2026

UPI processed 24.07 billion transactions worth ₹29.37 lakh crore in September 2026, according to data from the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), as per news reports. The monthly numbers were below August 2026, when transactions stood at 24.51 billion and their value reached ₹29.82 lakh crore.
There is a simple reason for that difference. September had 30 days, while August had 31. On a daily basis, UPI activity actually moved higher, with around 802 million transactions worth nearly ₹97,913 crore being processed each day.
Daily Payment Value Moves Higher
As per news reports, the rise was visible in the value of transactions as well. Average daily UPI transaction value had stayed around ₹96,000 crore between April and August before moving up to nearly ₹97,913 crore in September.
That means the increase during the month was not limited to the number of payments being made. The average value of daily transactions also reached a new high.
Festive Season Adds to UPI Activity
The September 2026 figures came as festive-season spending began picking up across the country. UPI was being used for everyday purchases as well as travel, dining, gifting and entertainment.
The timing also gives the September numbers a different context from the previous month, since the festive period extends into the months when major shopping activity takes place.
New MDR Framework from October 15, 2026
The latest figures arrive shortly before changes to the UPI merchant discount rate framework take effect on October 15, 2026.
Under the new framework, MDR will apply to certain UPI person-to-merchant transactions above ₹2,000. Smaller transactions and several specified categories will remain outside its scope.

Conclusion
September 2026 brought a new daily milestone for UPI, even though its monthly transaction count and value were lower than August. Average daily payments crossed 800 million for the first time, while daily transaction value also reached a record level as festive-season activity picked up.
