FPI Outflows Cross ₹1.29 Lakh Crore in H1FY27; Financials, Oil & Gas Bear Brunt

Foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) have taken out ₹1,29,187 crore from Indian equities during the first half of FY2026-27. The selling was spread unevenly across sectors, with financials and oil & gas accounting for the largest outflows.
The pressure was particularly visible in September, when FPIs sold ₹35,861 crore after buying in July 2026 and August 2026. Year-to-date outflows have reached ₹2,60,306 crore, according to news reports.
Financials See Highest Selling
Financials recorded the biggest sector-wise FPI outflow at ₹47,030 crore between April and September 15, according to Business Standard report citing Prime Database analysis.
Oil & gas followed with ₹33,359 crore, while automobiles, FMCG and telecommunications saw outflows of ₹22,507 crore, ₹16,876 crore and ₹16,861 crore, respectively.
Services and Consumer Segments Attract Buying
The selling was not spread across every part of the market. Services received ₹14,237 crore of net FPI buying during the period.
Consumer durables and consumer services followed with inflows of ₹11,409 crore and ₹10,504 crore, respectively.

FPI selling crossed ₹1.29 lakh crore in H1FY27, but the flow has varied sharply between sectors. Financials and oil & gas saw the heaviest selling, while services and consumer-linked segments attracted foreign buying.
