Tamil Nadu has now announced the distribution of one-gram gold rings to newborn children born in government hospitals which will be on September 28. 1,28,000 rings were purchased for the rollout in the first phase.

Under the plan, Thaimaaman Thanga Mothiram Thittam as it is called, eligible babies born in government hospitals will be provided with these from June 22. Every ring would have a separate serial number and comes in a tamper-proof packaging.

First Batch Ready For Distribution

The first phase will start with 1.28 lakh one-gram, 22-carat gold rings. The scheme has been made retrospective from June 22 so babies born in government hospitals from that date are covered under the first phase.

The state government has also set an eligibility condition that beneficiaries must be permanent residents of Tamil Nadu. The rings have been procured by the Tamil Nadu Medical Services Corporation through the Joyalukkas and Kalyan Jewellers.

₹755.83 Crore Budget Provision

Tamil Nadu has made an annual budget provision of ₹755.83 crore for the scheme. The full-year plan covers 4.41 lakh one-gram gold rings.

For the supply of the first batch, Joyalukkas and Kalyan Jewellers have been given a 70:30 share. The rings will be distributed as part of the scheme for eligible births in government hospitals.

Scheme Launch Was Postponed

The launch was originally scheduled for September 15, coinciding with the birth anniversary of former Chief Minister C N Annadurai. It was later deferred due to the Chief Minister's official visit abroad.

The Thaimaaman Thanga Mothiram Thittam was among the poll promises made by Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam ahead of the April Assembly election, according to the state government announcement.

September 28 Rollout

With the first batch already procured, distribution is scheduled to begin on September 28.

The retrospective coverage from June 22 will form part of the first phase, subject to the scheme's eligibility conditions.
