Punjab Govt Announces 8% DA Increase for Employees and Pensioners in 2 Instalments After Weeks-Long Standoff

In a recent move, the Punjab government resolved a longstanding standoff with state employees by agreeing to an 8% increase in Dearness Allowance (DA) for both employees and pensioners. This decision comes after intense negotiations and protests over pending DA dues and other demands. 

Punjab Government's Decision on DA Hike 

The Punjab government, led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, announced an 8% DA increase for approximately 8,00,000 employees and pensioners.  

This decision was made after a meeting with employee and pensioner representatives on September 18, 2026. The increase will be issued in 2 instalments, each of 4%, starting October 1, 2026. 

The standoff began on August 27 when over 3,00,000 government employees went on strike, demanding the release of their pending 18% DA along with other service-related issues. The Chief Minister emphasised the government's commitment to employee welfare, describing employees as the backbone of the state's administrative functioning. 

Dialogue with Employees and Pensioners 

During the meeting, the government assured employees that additional issues, including the Old Pension Scheme (OPS), will be addressed. Mann promised monthly meetings between the government and employee representatives to ensure continuous dialogue. He also mentioned that women employees will be posted within 40 km of their homes to balance career with personal responsibilities.

The government’s decision to increase the DA by 8% seeks to provide financial relief ahead of the festive season. Mann stressed that employee welfare is a continuous process, requiring ongoing dialogue. The government also plans to examine long-standing issues like the pension multiplication factor and assured career progression sympathetically.
