The Tamil Nadu Government has increased the Dearness Allowance (DA) for state government employees and teachers by 2 percentage points. With the latest revision, the DA rate has been raised from 58% to 60%, as per news reports.
Chief Minister Joseph Vijay announced the decision on Wednesday. The revised rate will come into effect from January 1, 2026, according to a statement issued by the Department of Information and Public Relations.
The DA revision will benefit nearly 16 lakh people across the state. This includes government employees, teachers, pensioners, and family pensioners covered under the state system.
The state government said the increase would result in an additional annual financial burden of about ₹1,230 crore. Funds required for the revision will be allocated by the government.
Dearness Allowance forms part of salary and pension payments and is revised periodically to offset the impact of inflation and rising living expenses.
The revised DA will be implemented retrospectively from January 1, 2026. Eligible employees and pensioners are expected to receive the revised amount after administrative processing by departments concerned.
In its statement, the government said the increase was approved for the welfare of employees, teachers, pensioners, and family pensioners. Tamil Nadu has one of the country’s larger state employee and pensioner bases.
The government also stated that necessary additional funds would be provided to support the implementation of the revised allowance structure.
"The dearness allowance currently at 58 percent for government officials and teachers will be increased to 60 percent from 01.01.2026, announced Honorable Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Thiru. S. Joseph Vijay." stated, Tamil Nadu's Department of Information and Public Relations.
The statement added that the increase would apply to eligible beneficiaries under the state government's payroll and pension system.
