The government of Tamil Nadu has announced a reduction of the VAT rate on aviation turbine fuel at Chennai airport, bringing it down from 29% to 16%, as per news report.

This decision aligns with the demand from the Union government and the aviation sector to alleviate some operational costs for the airlines.

VAT Reduction on Aviation Turbine Fuel

The VAT rate on aviation turbine fuel at Chennai airport has been significantly reduced to enhance the competitive positioning of airlines operating within the region.

The reduction from 29% to 16% represents a strategic economic decision meant to boost the local aviation industry by lowering operational costs associated with fuel.

Impact Beyond Chennai Airport

The reduced VAT rates are not limited to Chennai airport. For scheduled airlines refueling at other airports in Tamil Nadu, the VAT rate has been brought down from 29% to 1%. Furthermore, scheduled airlines operating aircraft with a maximum take-off mass of less than 40,000 kg and fuelling at airports other than Chennai will also benefit as the rate is slashed from 5% to 1%.

Alleviating Airlines' Costs

Aviation turbine fuel accounts for a major portion of an airline's operating expenditures. By reducing VAT, the Tamil Nadu government aims to lessen financial pressures on the aviation sector, which has frequently cited fuel costs, elevated by taxes like VAT, as a primary cost factor.

Long-standing Industry Demand

The VAT reduction comes as a response to the aviation sector’s longstanding call for tax relief. The Union government and aviation stakeholders have repeatedly emphasized the burden imposed by high fuel costs. By decreasing VAT, Tamil Nadu is aligning its policies more closely with industry needs and federal expectations.

Conclusion

On October 23, 2026, Tamil Nadu reduced the VAT on aviation turbine fuel at Chennai airport from 29% to 16%. This initiative also extends to other state airports, reducing rates for certain flights to 1%, addressing industry concerns over operational costs.
