Tamil Nadu CM Vijay Announces ₹4,800 Crore Drinking Water Projects, Other Measures

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay announced series of measures on drinking water in the state Assembly on Wednesday. The state government will spend ₹4,800 crore on several water-related schemes all over Tamil Nadu. 

Other announcements included the withdrawal of cases against farmers and teachers who had been involved in peaceful protests, new waste to energy projects and shifting towards digital driving licences and registration certificates. 

₹4,800 Crore Drinking Water Plan 

One of the biggest announcements was the plan to set up a 400 MLD desalination plant at Minjur. The plant will cater to the water requirements of North Chennai, Avadi, Ponneri and Minjur. 

The government will also spend ₹500 crore in Avadi Municipal Corporation to provide 24-hour drinking water supply to households. 

Another ₹1,000 crore has been allocated to improve drinking water facilities in Madurai and Cuddalore municipal corporations, nine municipalities and 20 town panchayats. 

The state has also kept aside ₹300 crore for the first phase of renovation of 33 old combined drinking water schemes. A separate ₹410 crore project will increase the capacity of the Chennai Kilpauk Water Treatment Plant. 

₹547 Crore for Waste-to-Energy Projects 

The government also announced two waste-to-energy projects in Tirunelveli and Salem. 

The Tirunelveli project will have a capacity of 9 MW and involve an investment of ₹256 crore. The Salem project will generate 10 MW at a cost of ₹291 crore. 

The two projects together will involve an investment of ₹547 crore. 

Driving Licences and RCs to Become Digital 

Tamil Nadu is also set to move driving licences and registration certificates to a digital format. 

From September 15, 2026, digital RCs will be available statewide for newly purchased vehicles. People passing their driving tests from the same date will receive digital driving licences. 

The digital documents will carry QR codes for electronic verification. They can also be downloaded and printed again if the original copy is lost or damaged. Transport-related services will gradually be brought under the Anywhere Registration and Licensing system.

Conclusion 

The measures announced in the Assembly include ₹4,800 crore of drinking water projects, ₹547 crore of waste-to-energy projects, withdrawal of specified cases against protesting farmers and teachers, and digital driving licences and RCs from September 15, 2026.
