Tamil Nadu CM to Inaugurate Gold Ring Scheme for Newborns Today (September 28, 2026)

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay is set to inaugurate the Thaaimaman Thanga Mothiram Thittam on September 28, 2026, aimed at providing a 1-gram, 22-carat gold ring to eligible infants born in government hospitals across the state, as per news report.
The initiative seeks to foster trust in public healthcare services while also honouring cultural traditions.
Gold Ring Scheme Details
The scheme aims to offer each eligible newborn a unique 1-gram, 22-carat gold ring. These rings will be distributed in tamper-proof packaging and feature a unique serial number.
An annual budget of ₹755.83 crore has been earmarked for this scheme, with an initial preparation of 1,28,000 rings.
Eligibility Criteria for Participation
To be eligible for this scheme, the mother must be a permanent resident of Tamil Nadu, and the baby should be born in a state-run hospital.
Additionally, beneficiaries need to be registered with the Pregnancy and Infant Cohort Monitoring and Evaluation (PICME) system and hold a Reproductive and Child Health (RCH) ID. Rings will be presented upon the newborn's discharge.
Operational Aspects and Monitoring
This scheme will roll out statewide except for Maduranthakam and Dharapuram constituencies due to impending bypolls.
Each district will have a specialised monitoring committee overseen by the district Collector to ensure seamless implementation and transparency.
