On June 19, 2026, Tamil Nadu approved the creation of 5 dedicated renewable energy zones under the Tamil Nadu Green Energy Corporation Limited, as per news report.

These zones are designed to manage wind and solar power projects, with headquarters located in Chennai, Tiruchirappalli, Tirunelveli, Coimbatore, and Madurai.

Renewable Energy Zones and Their Coverage

The Chennai zone encompasses the electricity distribution circles of Chennai, Kancheepuram, Vellore, and Tiruvannamalai. The Tiruchirappalli zone includes Tiruchirappalli, Villupuram, and Thanjavur circles.

The Tirunelveli and Coimbatore zones manage their respective distribution circles, while the Madurai zone covers Karur, Erode, and Madurai circles. These zones are strategically positioned to optimise the administration of renewable energy projects.

Administrative Structure and Responsibilities

Assistant Executive Engineers lead the project administration and implementation activities within these zones.

The zonal structure facilitates approval processing, project coordination, and the development of power evacuation infrastructure. Additionally, the arrangement supports the repowering of wind farms, which involves replacing or upgrading older wind turbines with newer units.

Associated Green Energy Programmes

The newly established zones will support various green energy programmes, including Battery Energy Storage Systems, PM-KUSUM 2.0, PM Rooftop Solar, and floating solar projects. Battery Energy Storage Systems are designed to store electricity for later use, while floating solar projects are installed on water bodies.

Distribution Circle Coverage

Electricity distribution circles serve as administrative units for state power utilities, facilitating local project handling.

The 5-zone model positions Chennai, Tiruchirappalli, Tirunelveli, Coimbatore, and Madurai as regional headquarters for renewable energy administration, ensuring efficient management and coordination of projects.

Conclusion

Tamil Nadu's establishment of 5 renewable energy zones aims to streamline the administration of wind and solar power projects. These zones, located in key cities, support various green energy programmes and enhance the state's renewable energy infrastructure.
