India's domestic work sector is witnessing a digital transformation as startups such as Snabbit, Urban Company and Pronto bring app-based booking models to a traditionally informal industry. By connecting households with on-demand domestic workers through mobile applications, these platforms aim to improve convenience for customers while creating flexible earning opportunities for workers.
However, as the gig model expands into household services, it has also sparked debate over worker welfare, job security and employment benefits.
For decades, Indian households have relied on word-of-mouth networks to hire domestic workers for cleaning, cooking and other household chores. App-based platforms are now attempting to formalise the sector by allowing customers to book workers instantly, similar to ride-hailing services.
Workers receive bookings through mobile apps, travel to customer locations and complete jobs that are tracked digitally through ratings and performance metrics.
Snabbit, which currently operates in 10 cities, including Delhi and Mumbai, has 20,000 registered workers completing an average of 60,000 jobs every day. Before joining the platform, workers undergo background verification and receive training on service quality and customer interactions.
For many workers, the app-based model offers the potential to earn significantly more than traditional domestic work while choosing flexible working hours.
According to the company, the flexibility allows many women to work around family responsibilities by accepting jobs based on their availability.
At the same time, labour unions argue that gig workers continue to lack essential employment benefits such as social security, pensions and job security. Worker representatives have also raised concerns over algorithm-driven ratings and incentives, which can directly affect earnings.
The growing popularity of instant home service platforms is also being driven by customer demand for greater flexibility. Unlike traditional domestic help with fixed schedules, app-based services allow users to book household assistance whenever required.
Beyond domestic cleaning, platforms now offer services ranging from appliance repairs and home maintenance to beauty treatments, reflecting the rapid expansion of India's gig economy.

As startups continue to digitise India's domestic work sector, app-based home services are reshaping how households hire help and how workers access employment opportunities. While the model promises higher earnings, flexible schedules and greater convenience, concerns around worker protections and long-term employment benefits remain central to the conversation. The sector's future is likely to depend on balancing innovation with stronger safeguards for gig workers.
