PMJDY Accounts Cross 58.84 Crore; Women Hold 32.79 Crore, Rural Areas 45.77 Crore

Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) accounts stood at more than 58.84 crore as of July 22, 2026, as per The Moneycontrol news report.
The government gave the figure in the Lok Sabha on August 10, 2026. PMJDY was launched in August 2014 to provide households with access to a basic bank account.
Women Hold 32.79 Crore Accounts
Women held 32.79 crore accounts, making up more than half of all PMJDY accounts. A total of 45.77 crore accountswere with beneficiaries in rural and semi-urban areas.
The figures were given by Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary in reply to an unstarred question from BJP MP Arun Govil.
Accounts Used for DBT Payments
The finance ministry said PMJDY accounts continue to be used for routing direct benefit transfer (DBT) payments to beneficiaries. The accounts can also be linked to RuPay debit cards, overdraft facilities, insurance and pension products.
Social Security Enrolments
The government also reported enrolment figures for three schemes linked to financial inclusion. PMSBY, which provides accident insurance, had 59.18 crore enrolments as of July 22.
PMJJBY, which provides life insurance cover, had 28.05 crore enrolments, while Atal Pension Yojana (APY) had 9.40 crore enrolments. APY is meant for workers in the unorganised sector.
2,421 Financial Literacy Centres
The Reserve Bank of India’s Centre for Financial Literacy (CFL) Project has been running since 2017. The government said 2,421 centres had been set up across the country, with each centre covering three blocks on average.
Banks also conduct financial literacy camps covering government schemes, basic banking services, digital financial literacy, and consumer protection.
PMJDY Launched in 2014
PMJDY was introduced in August 2014 with the aim of providing access to basic banking services. The scheme was later expanded to include overdraft facilities, RuPay debit cards and links to insurance and pension products.
The latest government figures put total PMJDY accounts at 58.84 crore, with women accounting for more than half and rural and semi-urban beneficiaries making up 45.77 crore accounts.
