Maharashtra Government Orders Action Against Builders Over MHADA Homes Transfer Delays

The Maharashtra government has mandated strict legal proceedings against builders for not transferring homes reserved for the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) in a timely manner, as per The Economic Times news report.  

This decision aims to enhance compliance and expedite the allotment of homes. 

Builders to Face Stringent Measures 

The Maharashtra government, under the guidance of Minister Mangal Prabhat Lodha, has decided to take stringent legal action against developers failing to hand over homes earmarked for MHADA.  

These measures may include registering FIRs and potentially sending offenders to jail as part of a deterrence strategy. This approach is expected to make an additional 1,000 MHADA homes available promptly. 

Delays in MHADA Home Transfers 

Builders are required to provide homes reserved for MHADA under statutory provisions. However, many developers delay these transfers for years, affecting the timely allotment to beneficiaries.  

Addressing these delays will help meet the growing demand for affordable housing. 

Advisory Committees to Aid Engagement 

Lodha proposed the formation of advisory committees within MHADA to improve citizen engagement. These committees will consist of local representatives, housing experts, architects, and other stakeholders to resolve local housing issues more effectively. 

Housing Lotteries and Future Plans 

During a MHADA lottery event for 2,640 homes, Minister of State Pankaj Bhoyar noted that the event received 75,127 applications, indicating sustained public interest. MHADA aims to construct 7,50,000 homes in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.  

The government has plans for constructing 30,00,000 homes, primarily through Slum Rehabilitation Authority and other agencies. Additionally, redevelopment projects on 925 acres in Mumbai will offer further housing solutions.
