The government has unveiled a major clean energy push aimed at lighting up one crore Indian households with rooftop solar systems by 2026–27. The announcement came from Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Pralhad Joshi, who addressed the Lok Sabha with updates on the country’s renewable energy programmes.

PM Surya Ghar and PM-KUSUM Driving National Rollout

"The government launched PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana (PM-SGMBY) in February 2024 for installing rooftop solar for one crore households by 2026-27 across all states and UTs in the country," Joshi stated. This initiative is designed to expand solar access at the household level and is being rolled out nationwide.

In addition, Joshi stated that, “The government has also been implementing the Pradhan Mantri-Kisan Urja Suraksha evam Utthaan Mahabhiyan (PM-KUSUM) scheme across all states and UTs of the country.” He explained that under this scheme, “capacities are allocated based on demand received and progress shown by the states and UTs.”

Employment Growth and Renewable Milestone

Quoting employment forecasts, Joshi said, “As per study on 'Powering Jobs Growth with Green Energy' carried out by the Council on Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW) in July, 2019, and co-benefits study report by TERI in October 2019, about 13 lakh employment opportunities are estimated to be created in renewable energy sector by June 2025.”

He also added that “about 31,829 local youth and technical workers, who were trained under Suryamitra, Vayumitra and Jal-urja Mitra Skill Development Programmes of the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, got employment.”

Strong Renewable Performance from Madhya Pradesh

Giving an update on regional contributions, Joshi said, “On June 30, a total of 11,279.39 MW electricity capacity from different renewable energy sources such as solar (5570 MW), wind (3195.15 MW), bio power (155.46 MW) and hydro power (2358.71 MW), has been installed in Madhya Pradesh.” He further noted that “under the scheme for 'Development of Solar Parks and Ultra-Mega Solar Power Projects', the ministry has sanctioned eight solar parks of aggregate capacity 4248 MW in Madhya Pradesh.”

Conclusion

The government’s focus on household solar under PM-SGMBY, paired with large-scale initiatives like PM-KUSUM and solar park expansion, highlights India’s aggressive move toward cleaner, decentralised energy solutions and job creation. With firm targets and nationwide implementation, the path toward a solar-powered future is clearly underway.
