PM-RAHAT, the Centre's cashless treatment programme for road accident victims, has settled 7,871 claims in just over 5 months since its formal launch, representing about 62% of the 12,727 claims initiated by hospitals, as per news reports.

Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari told the Lok Sabha that 9,601 claims had been approved by state health authorities as of July 28, while total disbursements stood at ₹10.1 crore.

PM-RAHAT Cashless Treatment Framework

The scheme was notified in May 2025, followed by implementation guidelines in June 2026, and formally launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 13, 2026.

Under the programme, eligible National Highway accident victims can receive cashless treatment at empanelled hospitals up to a specified limit. Hospitals raise the claims, state health authorities scrutinise them, and the Centre reimburses approved treatment costs.

Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh Lead Claims

Gujarat recorded 4,308 claims, of which 3,669 were approved and 3,355 settled. Madhya Pradesh reported 3,850 claims, with 3,290 approvals and 2,597 settlements.

Together, the two states accounted for nearly two-thirds of initiated claims and almost four-fifths of total disbursements.

Utilisation Varies Across States

Assam reported 1,557 claims, 1,263 approvals and 931 settlements. Jammu and Kashmir recorded 472, 51, and 43, respectively, while Odisha reported 306, 262, and 231.

Chhattisgarh recorded 304 claims, 284 approvals and 211 settlements, while Haryana registered 267, 91 and 40, respectively.

High-Fatality States Record Fewer Claims

Despite 3,913 National Highway fatalities, Uttar Pradesh initiated only 344 claims, with 14 approved and five settled.

Rajasthan recorded 2,417 fatalities but only 144 claims, with none approved by July 28. Tamil Nadu reported 3,520 fatalities, but just seven claims and no settlements. Maharashtra, West Bengal, Delhi and Punjab also recorded limited utilisation.

Government Focuses on Hospital Network

Gadkari said the ministry is working with states and Union Territories to empanel more hospitals, particularly near accident-prone National Highway stretches.

States have also been advised to ensure emergency treatment through appropriate legal provisions.
