Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the ₹1 lakh crore RDI Fund in New Delhi, marking a strategic push by the government to channel private capital into research and development.
The initiative seeks to strengthen India’s innovation ecosystem by supporting projects that fuse academic, industry and institutional capabilities.
The RDI Fund is designed as a blended financing vehicle, combining government grants, equity investments and debt instruments to crowd in private players. The fund will focus on high-impact research domains such as advanced manufacturing, climate technology, biotechnology and deep tech.
According to the news reports, both public research institutions and private companies will be eligible to apply, and the aim is to unlock new projects, accelerate commercialisation and support India’s goal of becoming a global innovation hub.
By incentivising the private sector to partner with research institutions, the RDI Fund is expected to bridge the traditional gap between lab and market. This could enhance India’s R&D intensity, improve technology absorption in industry and strengthen the country’s position in the global innovation landscape. However, execution will depend on governance, fund allocation processes and effective collaboration between stakeholders.
